Safe Spaces
Issue 03
2022
Safe Spaces invites readers to take a glimpse into the shared and authentic moments of what a safe space may mean to others. This issue explores the concept of any safe space, whether digital or physical, person or place. To develop the narrative of the book, the editorial team planned in-person workshops held by SM. We asked attendees five questions about their safe spaces and used those leading points to organize the content throughout the book.
For this issue, I assisted with concept development, designing and packaging the publication, and event installation setup.

Issue 03
A safe space is comforting and allows you to be your most authentic self. What is a safe space to you? Is it your childhood bedroom? Your local library? The venue you went to when you were a hard-rocking moshing teen? Maybe it’s your finsta that has 10 of your closest friends following it. Any safe space, whether digital or physical, is welcome.

Installation Release
To release Issue 03, we decided to design an intimate, close-quarters podium where visitors can pick up a copy of the publication in the middle of the space.

Production
I helped with packaging the publications with a laser-cut acrylic key, that Aldon Chen designed. The publications were given out to attendees at the Safe Spaces release event inside a clear plastic bag.

Design Process
It can be difficult to design democratically without attempting to apply a form of hierarchy within a team. For this issue, I designed chapter sections of the book, and provided constructive critique during feedback sessions.
